St. Matthew's Episcopal Community Westerville, Ohio

A church where everyone is welcome.

No, really.

St. Matthew's is an Episcopal community of radical hospitality where all are welcome, especially those who are sure they don't belong. We believe that all persons are beloved children of God, and we seek to accept, nurture, and love them—whomever and wherever they are.

So believe us when we say you're welcome. Yes, even you.

You found us! We are grateful for your visit, and we hope that we can meet you soon.

St. Matthew’s is a unique gathering of Episcopal followers of Jesus Christ who practice being a church based on relationships without a building to call home. We define church as a community of radical hospitality, not as a building where events and programs take place. We have settled our offices and community space in an Episcopal House called “Pray.Think.Love.” (A home that also provides a community chapel, library, and meeting space.)

We share our prayer and worship space with the Uptown Westerville community, as we hold our Sunday morning worship at a local Irish pub, and weekly prayer offerings on front porches, sidewalks, and streets. It is important to us to "be church" on the other six days of the week as well as Sunday. Our imperative is to be welcoming to the religious and non-religious alike, to those who see the world through a liturgical/sacramental lens and those who just want to take it to the streets.

We know that God is not finished with us, and that we are a pioneer people on a journey to discover what it means to be an ancient/future church. Join us on our journey!

By design we do not have a traditional church building, and that decision has opened many new opportunities for ministry in the Westerville community. On Sunday mornings, St. Matt's offers two distinctive worship hours in two distinct settings.

Early worship — 8am
pray.think.love. house (30 E. College Ave.)

Our first service features an interactive sermon (a collaboration between priest and congregation) and an intimate celebration of the Eucharist. Early risers and those who prefer a more informal gathering may want to check out Early Worship.

Early Afters — 9am
java central (20 s. state st.)

Continue the conversation sparked by the early worship gathering over a hot cup of joe at our favorite neighborhood coffee shop.

Later Worship — 10:30am
the old bag of nails, 3rd floor (24 n. state st.)

Climb or ride up to the third floor of this corner pub to worship in an inviting and informal space. If you're looking for a more traditional Eucharistic service, with music, collects, and creed, Later Worship is for you.

AfterWords — 12pm

Head over to the House for delicious brunch and lively conversation. The sermon and worship themes are the launching pad, but you never know where the discussion will lead.

pray.think.love.

It's not just the name of our house; it's our whole way of being. For us, these three words capture what it means to be a person of faith, especially a follower of Jesus Christ. We seek in all we do to be persons of deep prayer, thoughtful living, and steadfast love. If that's your definition, too, we invite you to join your path with ours.

St. Matthew's is a community committed to growth in prayer and spiritual formation, and we offer a wide array of opportunities in those areas.

Love is the absolute center of the life of discipleship. Our goal is to love boldly, extravagantly, and without limits. Come love with us!
